AI Task Force

Our AI Task Force Mission

Support, assist, and rally the nuclear-medicine community to translate the potential of data-driven solutions to improve healthcare.

Trustworthy AI : Show Clinical Value, Education, Develop and AI Ecosystem, Outreach

Task Force Organization

The SNMMI AI Task Force is composed of working groups for five core activities. Each working group interacts monthly to take steps to accomplish its core activity. In the monthly task force meeting, all task force members provide feedback, ideas, and suggestions to the working group.

SNMMI Annual Meeting

Highlights & Activities

If you’re interested in presenting your cutting-edge AI tools transforming nuclear medicine, molecular imaging, and theranostics, register here by May 13th.

Value of AI and Reimbursement

Working Group Leader: Munir Ghesani, MD, FACNM, FACR, FSNMMI

Motivation

AI applications in nuclear medicine are increasing rapidly but lagging reimbursement results in limited adoption in clinical practice.

Goal

Create a pathway for reimbursement of AI in NM.

Status

A working group with experts in diverse areas has been set up.

NMMI Data Models & Dissemination

Working Group Co-Leaders: Nikolaos (Nicolas) Karakatsanis, PhD, DABSNM and Tyler Bradshaw, PhD

Motivation

Data is a key element for AI efforts within nuclear medicine to be successful.

Goal

Develop a standardized data model and infrastructure to support multi-institutional data sharing.

Key Goals for 2026

  • Publish an initial version of the NMMI Lu177-PSMA Theranostics Data Model (April 2026)
  • Integrate the Lu177-PSMA data model to MIDRC dictionary and launch use-cases (July 2026)
  • Facilitate the open dissemination of shareable NMMI AI models and data (long-term)

SNMMI AI Certificate

Working Group Leader: Abhinav Jha, PhD

Motivation

Education needed across different specialties in our nuclear-medicine community for development of trustworthy and reliable AI.

Goal

Develop a certificate program for 3 tracks: physician in training; technologist; and scientist in training.

Key Goals for 2026

  • Short Term: Finalize the curriculum and start assigning lectures to specific speakers
  • Aim to finalize all lectures by March 2026
  • Advertise the program at the 2026 SNMMI Annual Meeting

Coming Soon! SNMMI AI Certificate Program

Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing strong promise in multiple aspects of nuclear medicine. SNMMI intends to realize this promise through rigorous validation, implementation, and clinical translation. This will require a workforce fluent in both AI and nuclear medicine.

Together, we will equip developers, physicians, and technologists with a well-rounded, cross-disciplinary understanding.

The SNMMI AI Certificate Program aims to address this critical workforce development gap in the nuclear medicine community.
