SNMMI Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Centers of Excellence Expand Across United States and Canada

Reston, VA (October 2, 2024) — The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) has designated nearly 100 institutions as Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Centers of Excellence across the United States, its territories, and Canada. An SNMMI Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Center of Excellence is a site that has affirmed they meet strict regulatory, training, qualification, experience and performance criteria. All centers’ applications have been vetted by SNMMI’s group of experts in radiopharmaceutical therapy.

As of today, 24 institutions have received the Registered Radiopharmaceutical Therapy (RPT) designation. Registered RPT sites administer at least one radiopharmaceutical therapy. Another 24 sites have received the Clinical Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Center designation, recognizing their experience with multiple radiopharmaceutical therapies and established care teams focused on specific disease areas. Additionally, 46 institutions have been recognized as Comprehensive Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Centers, meeting all preceding criteria and actively contributing to radiopharmaceutical therapy research.

Comprehensive: Administers multiple radiopharmaceutical therapies; has established care teams for specific disease areas; actively participates in radiopharmaceutical therapy research.

Clinical: Administers multiple radiopharmaceutical therapies and has an established care team in specific disease areas.

Registered: Administers at least one radiopharmaceutical therapy.

“With the Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Centers of Excellence designation, institutions can assure patients, their families, referring physicians, and payors that rigorous procedures are in place and followed, ultimately leading to appropriate patient selection and outcomes from radiopharmaceutical therapy,” said Cathy Sue Cutler, PhD, FSNMMI, president of SNMMI.

The need to increase access to radiopharmaceutical therapy—specifically theranostics—was recently highlighted in a report from The Lancet Oncology Commission. As part of its call to action, the journal recommended the adoption of global standards for infrastructure and administration, as well as harmonization of clinical trials to advance research.

“With the Radiopharmaceutical Centers of Excellence program,” said Cutler, “SNMMI is laying the groundwork for institutions in other countries to implement successful radiopharmaceutical therapy centers. We encourage others around the world to adapt these guidelines to ensure high-quality radiopharmaceutical therapy centers in their countries.”
