About SNMMI

The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), headquartered in Reston, Va., is a nonprofit scientific and professional organization that promotes the science, technology and practical application of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. SNMMI strives to be a leader in unifying, advancing and optimizing molecular imaging, with an ultimate goal of improving human health. With 13,000 members worldwide, SNMMI represents nuclear and molecular imaging professionals, all of whom are committed to the advancement of the field.

SNMMI History

In March 1953, sharing an interest in forming a nuclear medicine organization, five radiologists, a cardiologist, two internists, a physicist, an engineer, and a nuclear medicine physician from the Pacific Northwest met in Spokane, Washington. They founded the Society of Nuclear Medicine; all interested in nuclear medicine would be eligible for membership.

Governance

The SNMMI is a volunteer, not-for-profit entity organized under section 501(c) 3 of the IRS code. It is incorporated in the state of Washington and maintains its headquarters, with a paid professional staff of 45, in Reston, Virginia. The Society governance structure, in common with most professional medical societies, includes a policy-making Board of Directors, a representative component - the House of Delegates, committees, and councils.

Chapters

The Society has a strong grassroots network that provides a forum for SNMMI members to take an active part in local activities. As an SNMMI Member, you are automatically enrolled in one state/regional Chapters comprising the United States and Canada. Chapter participation enhances one of the most valuable member benefits—networking and sharing ideas with your peers. All SNMMI regional chapters are chartered by the National organization and actively support the Bylaws and policies of the Society.
